Corporate Happy Place Sound “Uncorporate”?

Talking about the “Corporate Happy Place”  in the corporate world is so…..uncorporate? No, not at all.

The science of  “Happy”:

The brain typically sends trillions of messages daily. The happy messages are sent by the “Endorphin system”

The word Endorphin comes from the combination of 2 words:

Endogenous morphine. Endorphins are the brain’s pain killers – except they are far more potent than morphine.

Best In Corporate Health and wellnessIn an extremely oversimplified description – when the body is stressed (we talk physiological /cellular stress at Best In Corporate Health) the body fails to send the happy messages.

The neurotransmitters  dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine are hugely responsible for reaching our happy place. Many anti depressants use the science of neurotransmitters. The truth is, proven in a number of studies, having a healthy inner biology is the very best way to naturally pump the endorphin system. Just a reminder – a good looking exterior does NOT mean there is a healthy inner biology!!!! Inappropriate food choices, lack of physical activity, too much of the wrong exercise, lack of quality sleep, stress, discord & confrontational relationships, environmental evils, our thoughts, attitude, emotions..…all of these can detrimentally affect our body chemistry. And let’s throw in some newer research – obesogens….disguised and lurking in our every day lives, sabotaging our very best efforts.

Once again – we have to look at the underlying cellular fitness – dig deeper than the facade.

Best In Corporate Health Creating Your Corporate Happy PlaceHappiness Starts in the Cell

At the center of cellular fitness is designing a process to minimize those agents that irritate the cells – front and center are inflammation and oxidative stress – yes, the same  menaces in the world of cancer, heart disease, depression, arthritis, Alzheimer’s, many of our chronic illnesses.  Front and center are nutrition and exercise,  as well as a number of other factors we must control in our lives to minimize the daily exposures to toxins, carcinogens, mutagens, viruses and bacteria, endocrine disruptors….all of which contribute to weakening cellular performance, which leads to unwanted, premature aging, sickness, and of course severely affecting our ability to be focused and productive.

Corporate Programs: 10 Common Mistakes

Corporate Programs…..Health is wealth..

Unfortunately, most corporate programs are prepackaged, and do not dig to the root of issues. We all know that productive, engaged employees are the very best asset for a company. Health is wealth. We all get wrapped up in the rat race of life, and unfortunately, health is not nurtured, until there is something wrong.

Many of the issues a company has with employees – absenteeism, lack of productivity or focus….are based on underlying dysfunction of health.

Cellular health  minimizes  those saboteurs which lead to poorly optimized health, enabling happiness, strength, empowerment, productivity  – and yes – prevent illness.

Creating a process which is individualized, carries the person beyond the end of the program, engages  participation and the mindset to continue….is not only best for the employee – but is a sound investment for the company.

Health is Wealth – Health for the employee, wealth for the company.

Far too many programs are temporary at best, or completely unrealistic for the employee to embrace. Reality, not theories of shoulds and should nots, need to guide the health process. Your employees’ realities are the template for an effective corporate program.  Here are the most common pitfalls of typical employee health programs.

Top 10 Most Common Mistakes of Corporate Health Programs
  1. Health is Wealth with Best In Corporate Health They are “programs”. Right away this implies a finite, set time, usually based on a predetermined agenda. Let’s help our employees on a process to evolve into healthier steps and give them the tools to continue this process.
  2. Don’t help the participants set the right goals – often unrealistic, superficial, or non health centric goals are set which lead to non compliance or learned helplessness. Many people reach for superficial goals normally associated with a fitness program which are temporary at best. By guiding them to dig a few levels deeper, addressing their own unique set of needs and any pre existing demands in their lives – a sustainable growth oriented process is developed and embraced. And yes, those original more superficial goals will be achieved in a more livable lifestyle.
  3. The Program is based on “pop fitness” vs. cellular fitness which is the only way to address health issues. If the Pop fitness paradigm doesn’t fit – which it usually doesn’t – leads to frustration and a sense of failure. The other aspect that very few consider – the “pop fitness” paradigm can be dangerous for many. Instead of fitness from the outside and assuming its helping on the inside (big assumption) fitness needs to be addressed from the inside out.
  4. Programs are one size fits all – not addressing needs, time, medical issues – possibly creating greater biological mayhem. Needs assessments do not have to be that complicated – and they set the stage for compliance and employee confidence. We all like to feel someone cares about us – not just filling in forms checking off boxes.
  5. Corporate Programs present a list of “shoulds” and “should nots” – Nobody is looking to feel deprived, guilted or more on their to do list.  None of us are looking for another miserable thing to do in our lives.
  6. Missing Measurable Outcomes: The process helps participants recognize progress & work through setbacks  providing mathematically measured success at regular intervals. Nothing assures adherence more than progress and victory.
  7. The Providers: most “fitness professionals” are limited to the limited outer appearances side of fitness mentioned earlier. The same information can be obtained searching online. That same information we shake our heads and say “tried it”. An understanding of hormones, circadian rhythms, agents in their environment that can be sabotaging their efforts beyond junk food in the cupboard and no time for exercise …if these many deeper aspects of cellular health are not incorporated – the program is far too simplistic, misleading and incomplete.
  8.  Lack of Accountability: We all have greater appreciation when we have invested time and effort into the project. Employees need to see a direct , quantitative relationship between individual changes and outcomes
  9. Follow through – Evolution did not happen in 1 session new habits. Psychologists say it takes 2 months of consistency to integrate a new lifestyle habit. Progression into habits often takes 2-3 cycles of  testing, growth and evolution.  We all know about going to a seminar – getting all Ra Ra – and then….flatline. A complete process needs tapered follow through
  10. Fitness Baggage…Attitude is everything. We all have experiences we are less proud of – and unfortunately that baggage weighs us down and doesn’t allow us to move forward. The go forward is far too often nothing more than either a pep talk or lost in the fine print.
We all need to feel valued and appreciated. Implementing a “Health is Wealth” mantra proves to employees, their health is wealth…. and yes we include partners too!
